The Recess Inn is off the beaten path in a village called Ethel, nine miles north of New Cambria. It's one of the prettiest drives in the state, and we invite you to take in the beautiful country scenery.

We're your sanctuary away from the hustle and bustle of everyday life. Here, you can kick off your shoes, unwind, and truly connect with those around you. Embrace the simplicity of our space and thoughtful amenities. Enjoy the cozy atmosphere, books, board games, puzzles, lawn games, and a delicious breakfast, all while experiencing the beauty of just being. Our gift shop is filled with locally crafted items, a testament to the creativity of our community.

The building has quite a story—it started out as a schoolhouse, built back in 1909, and welcomed its first students on January 31, 1910. For many years, it was a central part of this small rural community. It closed its doors permanently in 1980 and was renovated as an inn in the mid 1990s.

We're located 25 minutes from Marceline, the boyhood home of Walt Disney, where you can visit the original Main Street USA. Take in a live professional theater production at Maples Repertory Theatre in Macon, also 25 minutes away. Venture to Long Branch Lake outside Macon for fishing and swimming, or head to the John J. Pershing Boyhood home or Pershing State Park, about 35 minutes away. We are located 45 minutes from Kirksville, via a gorgeous blacktop country drive, where you will find Truman State University.

At the Recess Inn, we celebrate the rich history of Ethel while fostering a positive impact on our community. We're really a mini-museum. Our goal is to be a true partner through supporting local initiatives and engaging in projects that enhance the well-being of our residents and visitors alike. We believe in building connections, treating everyone with kindness and respect, and creating a welcoming atmosphere for all. As stewards of our environment and history, we are committed to preserving the stories of our Inn and the community we cherish.
